The Cape wine industry originated with the start of formal white settlement in the middle of the 17th century. Today South Africa's wine industry is developing fast after a century of political rivalry. As soon as the political scenario was settled, small private growers began to plant the varieties they preferred. Inward investment started to flow and the country is consequently primed to move in among the giants of the southern hemisphere.
